Augustus Keppel, Viscount Keppel (1725-1786), early to mid 19th century (watercolour, bodycolour, ivory, wood, gilt)

7340100 Augustus Keppel, Viscount Keppel (1725-1786), early to mid 19th century (watercolour, bodycolour, ivory, wood, gilt) by Unknown Artist, (19th century); 6x4.7 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: unknown; after Sir Joshua Reynolds
A rectangular portrait-format miniature in watercolour on ivory in an elaborately patterned gilt metal surround, set in a black-lacquered backing board, with a gilt metal fitting in the form of grapes or similar fruit at the top for a (missing) suspension ring. There is also a later wall fitting visible on the right side. A gold-painted inscription below the image reads ADMIRAL VISCOUNT KEPPEL. / 1725-1786'. The sitter is shown bust length against a sky background, facing forward but with his head slightly turned to his left. He wears the captain's full-dress of 1748-1767, with the left lapel falling inward over his waistcoat and the corner of his hat showing, tucked under his left arm. This item is a copy of part of Reynolds's full-length portrait of 1760, engraved in mezzotint that year by Edward Fisher, but of which the plate greatly suffered from reworking for at least two subsequent printings. It is itself only of mediocre quality (possibly amateur work) and probably from one of the later, and poorer, issues of the print rather than Fisher's original one, (PW3462). The frame is 19th century and could be the original one. This miniature was one of two acquired in 1964 having previously been in possession of Admiral Colin Keppel (1862-1947).); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite miniature portrait captures the distinguished figure of Augustus Keppel, Viscount Keppel (1725-1786), a prominent naval officer and politician of the 18th century. Painted in the early to mid-19th century by an unknown artist, this delicate watercolour on ivory is set within an ornate gilt metal frame, adding to its elegant charm. Viscount Keppel is depicted in his captain's full-dress uniform, showcasing his status and authority. His gaze is direct yet thoughtful, with a slight turn of his head adding a sense of dynamism to the composition. The intricate details of his attire are meticulously rendered, from the lapels falling inward over his waistcoat to the corner of his hat tucked under his arm. This miniature is based on Sir Joshua Reynolds's full-length portrait of Viscount Keppel from 1760, capturing not only the likeness but also the essence of this celebrated figure. Despite being a copy and possibly amateur work, it exudes a certain charm and historical significance that makes it a valuable piece in any collection. Acquired from Admiral Colin Keppel in 1964, this artwork has passed through generations before finding its place at the National Maritime Museum in London. It serves as a poignant reminder of an era gone by and pays tribute to one man's enduring legacy in British history.
