View in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, c. 1845
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the serene countryside of Jesmond in 1845. Painted by Elizabeth Burdon Sanderson, a talented artist from a prominent Newcastle family, this oil on canvas masterpiece captures the essence of a bygone era. As we gaze into the picture, our eyes are drawn towards the distant sight of St. Nicholas Church's tower with its distinctive corner spires. Little did anyone know at that time that this church would later become a magnificent cathedral in 1882. The painting showcases an idyllic scene filled with lush trees and rolling hills. In the foreground, we see laborers going about their daily tasks, adding life and movement to this tranquil landscape. The Tyne River meanders through the background, reflecting the peacefulness of its surroundings. The cityscape is yet to emerge as it remains hidden behind nature's beauty. A worker leans on his walking stick or cane while taking in the breathtaking view before him—a testament to both hard work and appreciation for nature's wonders. This artwork not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a reminder of how much our cities have transformed over centuries. It invites us to reflect on our connection with nature and appreciate the rich history embedded within every corner of our urban landscapes. (Photo credit: Bridgeman Images)
