Surgeon John McCosh, Bengal Medical Establishment, 1852 circa (b / w photo)

5921635 Surgeon John McCosh, Bengal Medical Establishment, 1852 circa (b/w photo) by McCosh, John (1805-85); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Surgeon John McCosh, Bengal Medical Establishment, 1852 circa.
Photograph, India, 1852 circa.
McCosh (1805-1885), who joined the Bengal Army as an assistant surgeon in 1831, was one of the first war photographers. He employed the calotype process, the first practicable negative and positive process on paper, patented by William Henry Fox Talbot in 1841. McCosh had an eventful life: the ship on which he was sailing to Tasmania on sick leave was wrecked and he was the only passenger to survive. He saw active service on the North East Frontier of India against the Kols 1832-1833, in Gwalior 1843-1844 (for which he was awarded the Maharajpoor Star to be seen in the portrait), the 2nd Sikh War (1848-1849) and the 2nd Burma War (1852-1853). McCosh also published a number of books and poems before and after his retirement on 31 January 1856.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures Surgeon John McCosh, a member of the Bengal Medical Establishment in 1852. McCosh, born in 1805 and passing away in 1885, was not only a skilled surgeon but also one of the first war photographers. The photograph showcases his dedication to documenting historical events through the calotype process. McCosh's adventurous life is reflected in this image. He survived a shipwreck while sailing to Tasmania on sick leave, making him the sole survivor among all passengers. Throughout his career, he actively served on various fronts such as the North East Frontier of India against the Kols from 1832-1833, Gwalior from 1843-1844 (earning him the Maharajpoor Star visible in this portrait), and participated in both the Second Sikh War (1848-1849) and Second Burma War (1852-1853). In addition to his medical achievements and wartime contributions, McCosh was also an author who published several books and poems before retiring on January 31st, 1856. This particular photo comes from an album containing a collection of 310 photographs taken between 1848 and 1853. Preserved by the National Army Museum in London, it serves as a testament to Surgeon John McCosh's significant role as both a medical professional and pioneer photographer during that era.
