EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful lithograph captures the tragic moment when Zedekiah, the last descendant of David to rule in Jerusalem, is blinded and taken to Babylon in 586 BC. The artist, Jose Villegas y Cordero, brings this historical event to life with intricate detail and emotion.
In 597 BC, Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon conquered Jerusalem and placed Zedekiah on the throne. However, Zedekiah's alliance with Haa-ab-ra (Hophra), king of Egypt, led to rebellion against Nebuchadnezzar. This ultimately resulted in the fall of Jerusalem once again in 586 BC.
The image depicts a solemn procession as Zedekiah is led away from his kingdom, his eyes covered and his fate sealed. The despair on his face reflects the weight of his actions and the consequences he must now face.
This illustration from Hutchinson's History of Nations serves as a poignant reminder of the rise and fall of empires throughout history. It symbolizes the harsh realities of power struggles and betrayals that have plagued civilizations for centuries.
As we gaze upon this print, we are transported back in time to witness a pivotal moment in ancient Mesopotamian history. The black-and-white contrast adds depth to the scene, emphasizing the gravity of Zedekiah's downfall.
