Votaries of the Weed No 50 (colour litho)

8660540 Votaries of the Weed No 50 (colour litho) by Clarke, Joseph Clayton (Kyd) (1856-1937); Private Collection; (add.info.: Votaries of the Weed, No 50. From 9.30 until 1 pm, this individual is merely a mechanical knob in a working business machine. But precisely as the latter hour strikes, he starts the consumption of a packet of sandwiches, two apples and a banana, and becoming actually human, covertly lights a cigarette with an air of placid content. At 2 pm he again relapses into the knob stage; but at 6.30 resumes his humanity, lights a second cigarette in the office doorway, and loses himself amid the homeward-bound throng. EDITORS COMMENTS
This color lithograph by Joseph Clayton Clarke (Kyd) titled "Votaries of the Weed No 50" captures a moment of quiet rebellion in the midst of a mundane workday. The scene depicts a man who transforms from a mechanical knob in a business machine to a human being with the simple act of lighting up a cigarette. As he enjoys his lunch break with sandwiches, apples, and a banana, he exudes an air of placid contentment that sets him apart from the office drones around him. The artist's attention to detail and subtle commentary on society's expectations and rituals is evident in this piece. The contrast between the man's robotic work persona and his more relaxed, human side highlights the struggle many face between conforming to societal norms and expressing their true selves. Through this illustration for Gallaher's set of cigarette cards, Clarke invites viewers to reflect on their own daily routines and consider how they can find moments of authenticity amidst the monotony. This artwork serves as a reminder to embrace our individuality and seek out opportunities for self-expression, even in unexpected places like an office doorway during rush hour.
