EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning Console table from late 17th century Venice. Crafted with exquisite attention to detail, this piece is made of ivory, stained horn, and pewter-inlaid ebony, adorned with amaranth, walnut, and fruitwood marquetry. The rectangular top features a central oval cartouche depicting The Battle of Vienna, portraying the fortified city at its center with Ottoman troops and mounted soldiers in the foreground. Villages and mountains can be seen beyond the battle scene. The intricate design is further enhanced by a fruiting laurel-wreath border and decorative flowerheads and scrolling acanthus on the angles. The console table stands on a beautifully carved stained walnut support featuring grotesque masks and foliate-wrapped scrolls. It bears markings on the underside in chalk as well as restorers' labels indicating its historical significance. Attributed to Lucio de Lucci but possibly crafted during the 19th century by his hand or under his influence, this remarkable piece exemplifies Venetian craftsmanship at its finest. Its ornate Baroque style reflects both Austrian influences from The Battle of Vienna depicted on it as well as traditional Venetian artistry. This photograph captures not only an extraordinary work of furniture but also serves as a testament to European history through its depiction of significant events like The Battle of Vienna. A true masterpiece that belongs in any discerning collector's private collection.
