EDITORS COMMENTS
The portrait of Flagmen of Lowestoft: Vice-Admiral Sir William Berkeley captures the essence of a young and courageous naval officer who met his fate at sea during the Four Days' Fight in 1666. Painted by Sir Peter Lely, this oil on canvas masterpiece showcases Berkeley in all his glory, adorned in armor and exuding confidence as he gazes into the distance.
At just 26 years old, Berkeley had already commanded several ships before being promoted to Rear-Admiral under James, Duke of York. His presence at the Battle of Lowestoft in 1665 marked a significant moment in history as it was the first fleet action of the Second Dutch War. Despite his valiant efforts, Berkeley tragically lost his life during subsequent battles.
The inscription on the painting may be confusingly labeled 'Sir Will Bartlett,' but there is no mistaking the bravery and determination depicted in this portrait. Commissioned by the Duke of York after the Battle of Lowestoft, this piece is part of a series known as 'flagmen,' honoring those who fought bravely for their country.
As we gaze upon this historical artwork, we are reminded of Sir William Berkeley's sacrifice and unwavering commitment to serving his nation with honor and valor.
