The Araguaya was built by Workman Clark & Co, Belfast in 1906 for Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. She was a 10, 537 gross ton ship, length 515.2ft x beam 61.3ft, one funnel, two masts, twin screw and a speed of 15 knots. There was passenger accommodation for 300-1st, 100-2nd and 800-3rd class. Launched by the Countess of Aberdeen on 5 June 1906, she sailed from Southampton on 12 October on her maiden voyage to Brazil, Montevideo and Buenos Aires, she continued on this service until 1917 when she was fitted as a hospital ship. She was handed over to the Canadian Government as a Canadian Military Hospital Ship. In 1920 she was handed back to RMSP Co, refitted and on 29 October 1920 resumed Southampton - Buenos Aires voyages. In 1926 she was refitted as a cruise ship with accommodation for 365-1st class passengers, but with the advent of the slump in 1930, was sold to Yugoslavenski Lloyd (Yugoslav Lloyd) and renamed Kraljica Marija'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the intricate menu cover from the RMSP 'Araguaya' in 1927, a piece of maritime history preserved for all to admire. Created by Kenneth D. Shoesmith, this artwork showcases the elegance and sophistication of dining aboard this majestic ship.
The 'Araguaya' was a grand vessel built in 1906 by Workman Clark & Co, Belfast for the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. With luxurious accommodations for passengers across three classes, she sailed on various routes including voyages to Brazil, Montevideo, and Buenos Aires. In 1917, she was repurposed as a hospital ship during World War I before returning to commercial service in 1920.
In 1926, the 'Araguaya' underwent another transformation into a cruise ship with enhanced amenities for first-class passengers. However, economic challenges led to her sale to Yugoslavenski Lloyd in 1930 where she was renamed 'Kraljica Marija'.
This menu cover serves as a reminder of the opulence and glamour that defined ocean travel during the early 20th century. It is a testament to both artistic craftsmanship and historical significance that continues to captivate viewers today at the National Maritime Museum in London.
