Paten (Dedicated to Saint Sergius) from the Beth Misona Treasure, Constantinople or Syria

491377 Paten (Dedicated to Saint Sergius) from the Beth Misona Treasure, Constantinople or Syria, c.500
(silver) by Byzantine School, (6th century); h:32.20 d:3.49 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: These four liturgical silver vessels--a paten and three chalices (1950.378-381)--form what is now called the Beth Misona Treasure, named for the village in northern Syria for which the objects were made. While nothing is known about the exact location and circumstances of the treasures discovery, the people of the village of Beth Misona were, like other Christian communities in Syria and Palestine, probably forced to bury their church silver to hide it from the Persians or Arabs, who conquered their lands in the first half of the 7th century. The paten, which held pieces of Eucharistic bread used during Mass, is decorated with an engraved Latin cross surrounded by a dedicatory inscription that names the patens donor--Domnos--and its original location--the church of Saint Sergios in Beth Misona. The chalices, which contained the Eucharistic wine used during Mass, feature broad cups decorated with portrait busts of Saints Peter and Paul, Christ, and the Virgin. One chalice bears a dedicatory inscription naming its donor--Kyriakos, Domnoss son--and the priest of the church that received the pious gift--Zeno.
the Greek inscription surrounding the cross in the center translates as: + Having vowed, DOMNOS, son of ZACHEOS, has offered (this paten) to St. Sergois of the village of Beth Misona.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite Paten (Dedicated to Saint Sergius) from the Beth Misona Treasure, believed to have originated in Constantinople or Syria around 500 AD. Crafted by the Byzantine School in the 6th century, this silver paten measures approximately 32.20 cm in height and 3.49 cm in diameter. Part of a larger collection known as the Beth Misona Treasure, these four liturgical silver vessels hold great historical significance. It is speculated that they were buried by Christian communities like those in Syria and Palestine during the first half of the 7th century to protect them from Persian or Arab conquerors. The paten itself served as a vessel for holding pieces of Eucharistic bread used during Mass. Adorned with an engraved Latin cross at its center, it features a dedicatory inscription that mentions both its donor - Domnos - and its original location: the church of Saint Sergios in Beth Misona. Accompanying this remarkable piece are three chalices, which held Eucharistic wine during Mass. These chalices boast broad cups adorned with portrait busts depicting Saints Peter and Paul, Christ, and the Virgin Mary. One chalice bears an inscription naming its donor - Kyriakos, son of Domnos - along with Zeno, priest of the receiving church. The intricate craftsmanship and rich history embodied within these artifacts make them invaluable treasures now housed at Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. This print allows us to appreciate their beauty while also reflecting on their journey through time and adversity.
