5311473 Illustration depicting a Fortin barometer. 1873. Jean Nicolas Fortin (1750-1831) was a French maker of scientific instruments. Fortin is chiefly remembered for his design of barometer, now called a Fortin barometer, which he introduced in about 1800. In this, the mercury cistern has a glass portion through which the mercury exposed to the atmosphere can be seen, and an ivory needle which was made just to touch its mirror image in the mercury before the reading was taken. This allows for the fact that, when the mercury column in the closed tube falls, the level in the cistern rises, and the difference in height between the two cannot be accurately determined unless the height of the latter is taken into account.; (add.info.: Date: 1873); Universal History Archive/UIG

1873 Atmosphere Barometer Cistern Ivory Mercury Needle Fortin
EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning illustration captures the intricate design of a Fortin barometer, created by the renowned French maker of scientific instruments, Jean Nicolas Fortin. Dating back to 1873, this print showcases the innovative features of Fortin's barometer, which revolutionized atmospheric pressure measurements.
Fortin's barometer is distinguished by its mercury cistern with a glass portion that allows for easy observation of the mercury exposed to the atmosphere. The inclusion of an ivory needle delicately touching its mirror image in the mercury ensures accurate readings are taken. This attention to detail highlights Fortin's dedication to precision and excellence in instrument-making.
The design introduced by Fortin around 1800 addressed a common challenge in traditional barometers - accurately determining differences in height between the closed tube and cistern when measuring atmospheric pressure changes. By incorporating these unique elements into his barometer, Fortin significantly improved its functionality and reliability.
As we admire this historical illustration depicting a Fortin barometer, we are reminded of Jean Nicolas Fortin's lasting legacy as a pioneer in scientific instrument design. His contributions continue to inspire innovation and progress in meteorology and other fields reliant on precise measurements and observations.
