Hand-coloured lithograph depicting the clipper chip Dreadnought off Tuskar Light (in Co. Wrexford) at night, with a bright moon encircled by dark clouds, and another 3 masted ship in the background on the right. Dreadnought was strongly built with a view to carrying a large spread of canvas in very strong winds. In this she was outstanding, but even more exceptional than the ship was her commander, Captain Samuel Samuels, and both are described at length by Basil Lubbock in Western Ocean Packets'. Lithographs showing this ship had a ready sale. She was the most successful ship of the Red Cross, or St George's Cross, Line. EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning lithograph captures the Clipper ship Dreadnought off Tuskar Light, just 12 1/2 days into her celebrated passage from New York to Liverpool in December 1854. The ship is depicted under a bright moon encircled by dark clouds, with another three-masted ship visible in the background on the right. Dreadnought was known for being strongly built to withstand strong winds and carry a large spread of canvas. However, what truly set her apart was her exceptional commander, Captain Samuel Samuels. Both the ship and its captain are described at length in 'Western Ocean Packets' by Basil Lubbock. This hand-colored lithograph showcases the beauty and power of this legendary vessel as she made her way across the ocean towards Liverpool. The image not only captures a moment in maritime history but also highlights the skill and craftsmanship of artists Charles Richard Parsons and Duncan McFarlane. The Clipper ship Dreadnought was part of the Red Cross Line (also known as St George's Cross Line) and was considered one of their most successful ships. This print serves as a reminder of an era when these majestic vessels ruled the seas, carrying goods and passengers between continents with speed and grace.
