Boulogne was a crucial port for the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in 1914, along with Le Havre and Rouen. General Sir John French and his Headquarters Staff were among the first to arrive at Boulogne on August 12th, marking the beginning of a long and difficult campaign.
The photograph evokes a sense of urgency and determination as troops disembark from ships, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. The sight of artillery being unloaded serves as a reminder of the immense firepower that would be brought to bear in this brutal conflict.
This lantern slide is just one of many in a collection that offers a glimpse into life during wartime. It is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for their country, capturing a moment in history that should never be forgotten.
