7337675 The Defence at the Battle of the 1 June 1794, 1811 (oil on canvas) by Pocock, Nicholas (1741-1821); 35.5x50.8 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Nicholas Pocock
An incident from the five-day battle known as the Glorious First of June 1794, during the French Revolutionary War, 1793-1802, between the British fleet under Lord Howe and the French fleet under Rear-Admiral Villaret-Joyeuse. This was the first great fleet battle of the French Wars of 1793-1815. It took place in the Atlantic, four hundred miles west of Ushant, when the French were attempting to intercept and escort home a valuable grain fleet from America and the British were also attempting to prevent this by capturing as much as possible. The Defence, 74 guns, commanded by Captain James Gambier, was one of the most heavily engaged ships, and is shown demasted in the middle of the picture, in starboard-quarter tending to broadside view. It is firing into the French Achille, 74 guns, on the right of the picture, in starboard-quarter to stern view, which is returning her fire. On the left of the painting the Defence is also being raked aft by a Frenchman, shown in starboard-bow view.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
The painting "The 'Defence' at the Battle of the 1 June 1794" by Nicholas Pocock captures a pivotal moment during the 'Glorious First of June', one of the first major naval battles of the French Revolutionary Wars. In this intense scene, we see the British ship 'Defence' heavily engaged in combat with the French fleet, specifically exchanging fire with the 'Achille'. The chaos and destruction of battle are vividly depicted as cannonballs fly through the air and smoke fills the sky.
Captain James Gambier's leadership is evident as his ship fights valiantly against overwhelming odds. Despite being demasted and under heavy fire from multiple directions, 'Defence' continues to fight back with determination and courage. The sheer intensity and ferocity of this naval engagement are palpable in Pocock's masterful brushstrokes.
This painting serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by sailors on both sides during times of war. It immortalizes a moment in history when bravery and skill were put to the ultimate test on the high seas. As viewers gaze upon this artwork, they can't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer magnitude of naval warfare depicted before them.
