During the First World War, John Everett was at first unable to sketch outdoors due to wartime security regulations, but in the spring of 1918, the Ministry of Information asked him to depict London river scenes. Everett received a permit to draw, and that summer, spent every day at the docks. EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the S.S. Lepanto and another steam vessel, both adorned in mesmerizing dazzle-paint patterns, peacefully anchored in calm waters in 1918. The artist behind this masterpiece, John Everett, was granted a special permit during World War I to sketch London river scenes amidst strict security regulations.
The concept of dazzle camouflage was developed by artist Norman Wilkinson in 1917 as a response to the devastating losses suffered by British merchant ships at the hands of German U-boats. This unique form of camouflage aimed to confuse enemy submarines by using bold geometric patterns and contrasting colors that disrupted their ability to accurately target vessels.
As we gaze upon this historical artwork, we are transported back to a time when innovation and creativity played crucial roles in protecting maritime assets during wartime. The intricate details of the steam vessels and the serene backdrop of the calm water serve as a reminder of the resilience and ingenuity displayed by individuals like John Everett who contributed to the war effort through their artistic talents.
This image not only showcases the beauty of these dazzlingly painted ships but also pays homage to those who worked tirelessly behind-the-scenes to safeguard our seas during one of history's most tumultuous periods.
