7337509 Portrait of a young boy, formerly thought to be Horatio Nelson, c.1810 (watercolour, ivory, paper) by Unknown Artist, (19th century); 5.7x4.6 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: unknown
Oval head-and-shoulders miniature of a young boy half turned to sitter's right in an oval gilt metal suspension frame. By tradition it has previously been identified as Horatio Nelson, when a boy, in part because of a piece of paper long fixed on the back and inscribed Horatio Nelson, Burnham Thorpe, aged 8..'. However, the boy wears a skeleton suit and hair cropped in the back, and with a long fringe, styles popularly worn by children in the first decades of the nineteenth century. It is therefore more likely that that it is one of Horatio Nelson's nephews, possibly of the Bolton or Matcham families.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait print captures the essence of a young boy, previously believed to be Horatio Nelson but now thought to be one of his nephews. The boy is depicted in a half-turned pose, wearing a stylish skeleton suit and sporting cropped hair with a long fringe, typical of early 19th-century fashion. The oval gilt metal frame adds an elegant touch to the miniature artwork.
The artist behind this masterpiece remains unknown, adding an air of mystery to the piece. Despite its small size (5.7x4.6 cm), the attention to detail in capturing the boy's expression and attire is truly remarkable.
Originally identified as Horatio Nelson due to an inscription on the back mentioning his name and age at Burnham Thorpe, further research suggests that it may actually depict one of Nelson's relatives from either the Bolton or Matcham families.
Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this portrait serves as a window into history, offering insight into children's fashion trends and societal norms during the early 19th century. The pensive look on the young boy's face invites viewers to ponder about his thoughts and dreams from centuries past.
Overall, this exquisite watercolor and ivory portrait print is not just a visual delight but also a historical treasure waiting to be explored by art enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
