EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the heroic moment of Horatius defending the bridge during a fierce battle between Rome and Clusium. The scene depicts Publius Horatius Cocles, along with his comrades Herminius and Lartius, valiantly holding off the attackers on the Pons Sublicius while their fellow soldiers work to destroy the bridge behind them. In this historic event circa 508 BC, King Lars Porsena of Clusium attempted to invade Rome through this very bridge, only to be met with unwavering resistance from Horatius and his brave companions. As Herminius and Lartius eventually retreated, Horatius stood his ground until the bridge finally collapsed, forcing him to make a daring leap into the river below for safety. The artist Bartolomeo Pinelli masterfully captured this intense moment in history with intricate detail and emotion. The aged appearance of the print adds a sense of authenticity to this ancient tale of valor and sacrifice. As we gaze upon this powerful image, we are reminded of the enduring spirit of heroism that has defined countless warriors throughout history. It serves as a timeless tribute to those who have fought bravely in defense of their homeland against all odds.
