The mine shafts were started in 1838, and coal was first produced in 1843. It was a large, deep pit with two lifts for taking miners down and bringing coal up. The winding gears for the lifts are visible between the two chimneys. This picture was probably commissioned by the mine company to mark the opening of the pit.
