Rev. John Wesley (oil on canvas)

TW429330 Rev. John Wesley (oil on canvas) by Horsley, Thomas (fl.1784) (attr); 61x49.5 cm; Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, Tyne & Wear, UK; (add.info.: Rev. John Wesley (1703-91), son of a Lincolnshire rector, was from his Oxford days an earnest Christian and an inspiring preacher. His Methodism, appealing to many serious Church members, soon developed its own rules and organisation; it was in 1784, the year of this portrait, that Wesley set the Methodist movement on a permanent footing. He had since 1742 journeyed tirelessly around Britain, preaching out of doors when he found churches closed to him. On his 29th visit to sunderland Robert Hawthorn, a leading Methodist, persuaded Wesley to have his portrait painted by local artist John Horsley. In the background is a small vignette of Wesleys chapel on City Road, London, opened in 1778. The original painting passed eventually to the Methodist College in Richmond, Surrey, now closed; ); eSunderland Museums; British, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an oil on canvas portrait of Rev. John Wesley, a prominent figure in the Methodist movement. Painted by Thomas Horsley, this 61x49.5 cm artwork is displayed at the Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens in Tyne & Wear, UK. Rev. John Wesley was not only a devoted Christian but also an influential preacher who inspired many with his sermons. Born in 1703 to a rector in Lincolnshire, he dedicated his life to spreading Methodism and establishing its own set of rules and organization. In fact, it was in 1784, the same year this portrait was created, that Wesley solidified the Methodist movement's permanent foundation. Throughout his tireless journeys around Britain since 1742, Wesley preached outdoors when churches refused him entry. During his 29th visit to Sunderland, Robert Hawthorn convinced him to sit for a portrait painted by local artist John Horsley. The painting features a small vignette of Wesleys chapel on City Road in London as its backdrop—a significant symbol representing the opening of the chapel in 1778. Originally housed at the Methodist College in Richmond, Surrey (now closed), this remarkable piece captures both the essence and legacy of Rev. John Wesley—an unwavering advocate for faith and spirituality during challenging times.
