An interpretation of an action during the First Dutch War, 1652-1654. The increasing conflict of trade interests between England and the Netherlands in the first half of the 17th century made armed conflict likely and inevitable after Cromwell's Navigation Act of 1651. All three Anglo-Dutch wars which followed were solely maritime conflicts. By early in 1653 the English forces were split and their position in the Mediterranean became critical. Captain Badiley was trapped with four men-of-war at Porto Longone in Elba, and Captain Appleton with the Leopard, 50 guns and five hired merchantmen, was similarly placed at Leghorn, where the Dutch fleet was also hovering.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense naval battle known as The Battle of Leghorn, which took place on 4 March 1653 during the First Dutch War. Painted by Reinier Nooms in the mid-17th century, this oil on canvas artwork depicts a crucial moment in history when trade interests between England and the Netherlands escalated into armed conflict.
The scene shows English forces under Captain Appleton trapped at Leghorn, facing off against the Dutch fleet hovering nearby. With smoke billowing from cannons and ships engaged in fierce combat, the chaos and intensity of maritime warfare are vividly portrayed.
As tensions mounted between these two powerful nations, all three Anglo-Dutch wars that followed were fought solely at sea. This painting serves as a reminder of the high stakes involved in maritime conflicts during this period.
With its detailed depiction of ships, battle scenes, and dramatic colors, this print offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in European history. The historical significance of The Battle of Leghorn is brought to life through Nooms' masterful brushwork and attention to detail.
