Dating back to the 12th century, pilgrims have been making their way to Mariazell to pay homage to the Marian sanctuary. The illustration depicts a scene from 1836 when larger numbers of pilgrims were documented embarking on their journey. The history of pilgrimage to Mariazell is rich and complex, with roots in atonement for criminals imposed by a secular court in the early 14th century. Over time, increasing numbers of pilgrims traveled from neighboring lands seeking solace and divine intervention. Following the Counter-Reformation, Mariazell was established as a national sanctuary by the Habsburgs, solidifying its importance within Austrian religious culture. However, Emperor Joseph II's dissolution of the monastery in 1783 and subsequent ban on pilgrimages in 1787 posed challenges to this sacred tradition. Despite these obstacles, devout believers continued their journeys to Mariazell, demonstrating unwavering faith and dedication. This remarkable image serves as a testament to centuries-old traditions and beliefs that continue to inspire countless individuals on their spiritual quests. The Pilgrimage to Mariazell remains an enduring symbol of devotion and reverence for those who seek comfort and guidance along their path towards enlightenment.
