Olav the Saint did much towards the advancement of Christianity among his subjects. One morning the people who had assembled to hear Mass brought with them a great image of the god Mor. All at once the sun burst through the clouds, and the congregation all turned towards the east. The King struck the idol a terrific blow with his club, shattering it to pieces. EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful lithograph captures the moment King Olav the Saint bravely shattered the image of the god Mor, marking a significant turning point in the advancement of Christianity among his subjects. As depicted in this illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations, Olav struck a decisive blow with his club, breaking the idol into pieces and revealing a disturbing sight - rats, lizards, snakes, and other creatures that had been living off offerings to the false deity.
The dramatic scene unfolds as rays of sunlight burst through the clouds, symbolizing divine intervention and illuminating the truth behind this pagan practice. The shocked congregation witnesses their king's bold act of faith and devotion to Christianity amidst a backdrop of religious ceremony and worship.
This historic event not only showcases King Olav's commitment to spreading Christian beliefs but also highlights the clash between old traditions and new faith. The artist John Harris Valda skillfully captures every detail of this pivotal moment in early 11th-century Norway, from the expressions on people's faces to the intricate fragments of shattered idol scattered on the ground.
Through this print, viewers are transported back in time to witness an important chapter in religious history where one man's courage changed an entire community's belief system forever.
