EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning engraving captures the grandeur and elegance of Old Paris in the late 19th to early 20th century. The Hotel Saint-Pol, also known as the Hotel des Comtes de Saint-Pol, was a royal residence built by King Charles V in the 14th century for himself and his son Charles VI. Stretching from Quai des Celestins to Rue Saint-Antoine, this magnificent estate was a symbol of power and luxury.
Sadly, this historic building was completely destroyed in the 16th century, leaving only remnants like the wall of St. Paul's Church that once belonged to it. The intricate details captured in this engraving allow us to imagine what life must have been like within these walls centuries ago.
The architecture, fountain, and lush garden depicted in this print transport us back in time to a period of opulence and sophistication. The black-and-white aesthetic adds a timeless quality to the image, emphasizing the enduring beauty of Old Paris.
As we gaze upon this piece of history preserved through art, we are reminded of the rich cultural heritage that defines Paris as one of the most iconic cities in Europe. This engraving serves as a window into a bygone era when royalty roamed its halls and lavish parties filled its rooms with laughter and music.
