EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured aquatint print, titled "Garden of the Temple of Lewchew, 1820" takes us on a visual journey to the enchanting landscapes of East Asia. Created by an anonymous English School artist in the 19th century, this artwork is part of a private collection and showcases scenes from Lord Amherst's ill-fated voyage. The image is an illustration from John McLeod's book, "Voyage of His Majesty's Ship Alceste, to China, Corea, and the Island of Lewchew". Published in London in 1820, it recounts the shipwreck that occurred during Lord Amherst's embassy to China. The Alceste sank off Sumatra on its return voyage after completing its diplomatic mission. In this particular scene captured by the artist's skilled hand, we are transported to a serene garden within the Temple of Lewchew. Lush vegetation surrounds us as figures dressed in traditional Asian attire go about their daily activities. Japanese locals can be seen carrying barrels while others engage in various tasks amidst blooming flora. The print offers a glimpse into both cultural and natural beauty found within these distant shores. It serves as a testament to exploration and discovery during an era when such voyages were fraught with danger yet yielded invaluable insights into far-off lands like Japan and Ryukyu (Lewchew). Bridgeman Images has preserved this remarkable piece from history for our enjoyment today. As we admire this artwork
