French peasants being taken to Germany, 1914 (lantern slide)
5925390 French peasants being taken to Germany, 1914 (lantern slide) by Newton & Co. (1858-1953); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: French peasants being taken to Germany, 1914.
Lantern slide, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1914.
Thousands of French civilians were removed from the occupied areas behind the front line. Sometimes this was done for security reasons or because the Germans, suffering their own food shortages and having requisitioned the local supplies, did not want to feed the population. More common however was forced evacuation to other parts of occupied France or Germany for forced labour in industry or agriculture.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the plight of French peasants being taken to Germany in 1914 during World War One. The lantern slide, captured by Newton & Co., shows a group of civilians being transported in wagons towards an uncertain future.
During this tumultuous time, thousands of French civilians were forcibly removed from their homes behind the front lines. Some were relocated for security reasons or due to food shortages caused by German occupation. However, many were sent to other parts of occupied France or even Germany for forced labor in industries and agriculture.
The faces of these peasants reflect fear and uncertainty as they are uprooted from their familiar surroundings and separated from their loved ones. The photography adds a sense of gravity to the scene, emphasizing the harsh reality faced by these individuals.
This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of war and the impact it has on innocent civilians caught in its crossfire. It is a poignant glimpse into a dark chapter of history that should never be forgotten.
