EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning piece of furniture known as the "Settle, c. 1895". Crafted with joined solid oak and featuring a webbing seat and upholstered velvet cushion, this exquisite settle is truly a work of art. Believed to have been designed by W. R. Lethaby around 1895, its timeless beauty still resonates today. The settle boasts an elegant serpentine shaped top rail adorned with six back splats that taper at the top. Its scrolling wings are upholstered in luxurious cotton velvet, embellished with a border of metal studs. The design itself is a repeated stylized flower and foliage pattern, expertly raised from the beige ground in brown velvet. Scrolling arms add to the overall gracefulness of this piece while two vertical planks form the sides below them. The webbed seat is covered by a rectangular upholstered cushion matching the wing design flawlessly. Although it has endured some wear over time, including loose scrolling arms and fabric holes on the seat, this settle remains undeniably enchanting. A few missing studs on both wings only add character to its story. Preserved within The Geffrye Museum of the Home in London, UK, this English masterpiece continues to captivate visitors with its intricate craftsmanship and enduring charm.
