Metal scabbard with two suspension rings.
Ewart used this sword and scabbard as a substitute to a claymore he had lost during the Battle of the Alma (1854). He came across it on the march to Sevastopol when he found some baggage carts that had belonged to Russian Hussar officers.
The sword and scabbard were given to him on his appointment to General AireyAs Staff. He would probably have carried this sword through the rest of his Crimean service, including the Battles of Balaklava and Inkerman.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a remarkable piece of history, showcasing the Russian Hussars Officers scabbard belonging to Deputy Assistant Quartermaster General John Alexander Ewart. This metal scabbard, crafted by the Russian School in the 19th century, is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. Ewart's connection to this scabbard holds a fascinating story. After losing his claymore during the Battle of Alma in 1854, he stumbled upon some abandoned baggage carts that had once belonged to Russian Hussar officers on his march to Sevastopol. It was here that he discovered this sword and scabbard, which became a substitute for his lost weapon. Given to him upon his appointment as part of General Airey's Staff, Ewart likely carried this sword throughout his service in Crimea. From the Battles of Balaklava and Inkerman to other significant moments during the Crimean War (1854-1856), this scabbard remained an integral part of Ewart's military journey. Associated with Dep Asst QMG John Alexander Ewart from the renowned 93rd (Highland) Regiment of Foot, this artifact serves as a testament not only to Ewart's personal experiences but also symbolizes the resilience and adaptability displayed by soldiers during times of conflict. Preserved through time and now immortalized through photography, this image allows us a glimpse into history while honoring those who have served their nations with valor and dedication.
