The Grand Marshal proclaimed Emperor on the Battlefield (colour litho)

8661446 The Grand Marshal proclaimed Emperor on the Battlefield (colour litho) by Wright, Henry Charles Seppings (1850-1937); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Grand Marshal proclaimed Emperor on the Battlefield. After Han Yu's death in 824 AD, China remained in a state of chaos for many years. Five small dynasties followed one another in the south of China while the Tartars conquered the north. The Grand Marshal to the last of these Emperors - a mere boy - was repelling a Tartar raid when his army vested him with the yellow robe and proclaimed him Emperor of the house of Sung. He professed surprise and reluctance, but there is little doubt that he knew of the design. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920).); © Look and Learn

In a time of chaos and uncertainty in China, after Han Yu's death in 824 AD, this young boy found himself leading his army against Tartar raiders. As he valiantly fought to defend his people, his soldiers saw fit to vest him with the yellow robe and declare him Emperor of the house of Sung. The expression on The Grand Marshal's face shows a mix of surprise and reluctance at this unexpected turn of events. While he may have professed astonishment, there is little doubt that he knew what was coming. This pivotal moment in history is beautifully captured by artist Henry Charles Seppings Wright, showcasing not only the grandeur of the scene but also the complex emotions at play. As we gaze upon this historical illustration from Hutchinson's History of Nations, we are transported back to a time of turmoil and transition in ancient China.
