EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning punch bowl painted with warehouses or Hongs in Canton (Guangzhou) during the Qing Dynasty's Qianlong Period. Measuring 15.2x36.9 cm, this porcelain masterpiece is housed at Leeds Museums and Art Galleries in Temple Newsam House, UK. The intricate design of the bowl features a remarkable contrast between grisaille decoration and gilt accents, although some of the gilding has worn away over time. On the outside, it depicts a panoramic view of the hongs - European and American workshops or warehouses - situated along the Pearl River in Canton. Canton, now known as Guangzhou, holds historical significance as it is currently China's largest city in Guangdong province. The foot of the bowl displays an exquisite gilt meander border within a double grisaille band. Inside this magnificent piece lies another breathtaking scene: a depiction of East India Company ship Pitt sailing amidst delicate cell-patterned borders adorned with gold leaf. It is worth noting that these hongs were tragically destroyed by fire in 1856. This particular porcelain body was crafted at Jingdezhen (formerly written Ching-te-Chen), while its painting and decoration took place in Canton. Bridgeman Images has beautifully captured this artwork from Leeds Museums and Art Galleries' collection for all to appreciate its historical significance and artistic brilliance.
