EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing print showcases an extraordinary artifact from the 19th century, known as the "Instrument for tattooing deserters". Crafted with brass and steel, this instrument was a chilling reminder of the consequences faced by those who abandoned their military duties. The design features a brass body and trigger, adorned with a distinctive D plate, alongside menacing steel spikes. Manufactured by Savigny and Company in London, its purpose was to permanently mark deserters with the initial "D" on either their face or armpit. Operating this instrument required pulling a thumb piece at one end of the cylinder, causing the piston to retract and catch on a ratchet mechanism. Upon releasing it through depression of a steel lever, an internal spring forcefully drove the piston downwards along with its sharp spikes. This macabre tool served as both punishment and deterrent within military ranks during that era. Its presence alone would have instilled fear among soldiers contemplating desertion. Now preserved in London's National Army Museum, this photograph allows us to reflect upon past disciplinary practices while acknowledging how far our understanding of justice has evolved over time. It serves as a powerful testament to human ingenuity when it comes to enforcing discipline but also reminds us of the importance of compassion and fairness in modern society.
