EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in American history. Nellie Tayloe Ross, the first female director of the United States Mint, is seen alongside Edward Bruce, head of the Public Works of Art Project, as they meticulously inspect designs for the new Jefferson nickel in 1938. The Treasury Department had organized a competition to find an exceptional design for the five-cent coin, and this image showcases Mrs. Ross surrounded by 390 models that were submitted. Her expertise and discerning eye are evident as she carefully evaluates each entry. Born Nellie Davis Tayloe in 1876, Mrs. Ross was not only a trailblazing politician but also became known as a dedicated civil servant. She succeeded her husband William B.
