Stele of the High Priest of Ptah, Shedsunefertem, 945-924 BC (limestone)

490747 Stele of the High Priest of Ptah, Shedsunefertem, 945-924 BC (limestone) by Egyptian 22nd Dynasty (945-715 BC); 86.8x78.5 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: In the center of the top register is a disk and crescent, originally gilded. At either side a baboon raises its arms in adoration. The Egyptians believed that the jabbering of the baboons at dawn was a hymn of praise to the sun god Ra in a secret language only the king understood. It begins, Praising Ra when he shines on the horizon. Directly below in the middle register a child god is seated on a lotus flower. In Egyptian mythology the sun arose out of the primeval waters at the dawn of creation in a lotus flower. Winged figures of Maat, goddess of Truth, stand protectively at either side. The damaged figure of the high priest himself, wearing the panther skin and jackal-collar of his office, appears at the far right, worshipping the god Ptah, whose consort, the lioness-headed goddess Sekhmet, appears on the far left. The figures in the bottom register are colleagues who appear here as dependents under the powerful high priests protection.); Gift of the John Huntington Art and Polytechnic Trust; Egyptian, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Stele of the High Priest of Ptah, Shedsunefertem, a remarkable piece from ancient Egypt dating back to 945-924 BC. Carved out of limestone and measuring 86.8x78.5 cm, this artwork is housed in the prestigious Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. At first glance, one's eyes are drawn to the top register where a gilded disk and crescent take center stage. Flanking this celestial symbol are baboons with raised arms in adoration, believed by Egyptians to sing hymns praising the sun god Ra at dawn using a secret language understood only by kings. Moving down to the middle register, we encounter a child god seated on a lotus flower - an emblematic representation of creation as per Egyptian mythology. Winged figures of Maat stand protectively on either side, embodying truth and justice. The damaged figure on the far right represents none other than Shedsunefertem himself - adorned with his distinctive panther skin and jackal-collar attire as high priest. He is depicted worshipping Ptah while Sekhmet, Ptah's lioness-headed consort, stands opposite him on the left. Lastly, in the bottom register are colleagues portrayed as dependents under Shedsunefertem's protection - illustrating his powerful position within society.
