The Captain capturing the San Nicolas and the San Jose at the Battle of Cape St Vincent, 14 February 1797, 1808 (oil on canvas)

7337680 The Captain capturing the San Nicolas and the San Jose at the Battle of Cape St Vincent, 14 February 1797, 1808 (oil on canvas) by Pocock, Nicholas (1741-1821); 35.6x53.3 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Nicholas Pocock
An incident during the French Revolutionary War, 1793-1802. The painting shows the Captain, the Spanish ships San Nicolas, 80 guns and the San Josef, 112 guns, occupying the foreground, all in starboard-quarter view. To the left and nearest is the Captain, her fore-topmast over her starboard side and her port bow up against the San Nicolas's starboard quarter. Aboard the San Nicolas, her pendant is shown coming down and a sailor on the poop is hauling down her ensign. Her mizzen mast is shot away and may be represented by the spar shown floating in the left foreground. Her bowsprit is caught up in the San Josef's starboard main shrouds beyond and to the right. In both the left and right background are ships in action, in starboard-quarter view. The painting records the manoeuvre, which became known as Nelson's Patent Bridge for Boarding First-Rates'.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
The painting captures a pivotal moment in naval history - the Battle of Cape St Vincent on 14 February 1797. In this intense scene, the British ship 'Captain' is seen capturing the Spanish ships 'San Nicolas' and 'San Jose'. The artist, Nicholas Pocock, skillfully portrays the chaos and drama of battle with meticulous detail. The 'Captain', positioned in the foreground, is shown engaging with the enemy ships in a fierce struggle for victory. The Spanish vessels, with their impressive firepower, are no match for the strategic brilliance of British Admiral Nelson's tactics. The painting showcases the innovative maneuver known as 'Nelson's Patent Bridge for Boarding First-Rates', which ultimately led to success in this historic battle. As smoke billows from cannon fire and sailors scramble to carry out orders, viewers are transported back to a time when naval warfare was at its most intense. The sheer scale of the conflict is evident as other ships can be seen battling it out in the background. This artwork serves as a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice displayed by sailors on both sides during this turbulent period in history. It immortalizes a moment when courage and cunning prevailed against overwhelming odds on the high seas.
