7342287 Hogland, August 24 1855, Finland, 1855 (watercolour) by Fanshawe, Admiral Sir Edward Gennys (1814-1906); 17.5x25.8 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Admiral Sir Edward Gennys Fanshawe
No. 4 in Fanshawe's Baltic and later album, 1843-1883. In 1788 it was the site of a notable naval battle in the Russo-Swedish War. Fanshawe here shows the settlement, his closer view of the church being PAI4675. The ships on the right are his own steam corvette Cossack on the left and probably the larger Amphion of his friend and contemporary, Captain Astley Cooper Key. The viewpoint is probably north towards the Finnish coast. The identity of the animal in the right foreground is uncertain but, if a dog, may be Fanshawe's.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolour print by Admiral Sir Edward Gennys Fanshawe captures the picturesque scene of Hogland, Finland on August 24, 1855. The artwork showcases the quaint settlement with a focus on the church in the background, providing a glimpse into daily life in this coastal town.
The ships depicted on the right side of the painting are identified as Fanshawe's own steam corvette 'Cossack' and possibly his friend Captain Astley Cooper Key's larger vessel 'Amphion'. These ships add a dynamic element to the peaceful coastal landscape, hinting at maritime activities that were common during that time period.
Fanshawe's attention to detail is evident in every aspect of this composition, from the rolling hills in the distance to the animal - possibly his own dog - in the foreground. The use of vibrant colors brings this historical moment to life, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in 19th-century Finland.
Overall, Fanshawe's depiction of Hogland offers a window into a bygone era and serves as a reminder of both the beauty and significance of maritime history. This print is not just an artwork but also a valuable historical document that preserves moments from centuries past for future generations to appreciate.
