(pen and ink) by Radcliffe, Herbert Delme (fl.1855); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Charge of the 23rd at the assault of the Redan, 8 September 1855.
Pen and ink drawing by Lieutenant Herbert Delme Radcliffe, 23rd Regiment of Foot (Royal Welch Fusiliers), 1855.
The attack against the Redan had already stalled when, as a last desperate throw of the dice, Major-General Sir William Codrington sent forward a wing of the 23rd (Royal Welsh Fusiliers) Regiment. It was hoped that the 23rd might be able enter the Redan by its right face and get behind the Russian defenders, but when this attempt failed the rout of the British troops desperately trying to cling on inside the salient angle and along the outer slope of the Redan became inevitable. Among the wounded who managed to make their way back to the British trenches was the executor of this sketch, Lieutenant Delme Radcliffe.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Charge of the 23rd at the assault of the Redan, September 8th 1855" captures a pivotal moment in history during the Crimean War. In this pen and ink drawing by Lieutenant Herbert Delme Radcliffe, we witness the desperate attempt by Major-General Sir William Codrington to turn the tide of battle. As British troops fought fiercely against Russian defenders, their attack on the Redan had already faltered. In a last-ditch effort, Codrington ordered a wing of the 23rd Regiment of Foot (Royal Welch Fusiliers) to charge forward. The hope was that they could flank and surprise their enemies from behind. However, despite their bravery and determination, this daring maneuver proved unsuccessful. The British soldiers found themselves overwhelmed by superior Russian forces. The chaos and desperation among those clinging onto survival inside the salient angle and along the outer slope became inevitable. Lieutenant Delme Radcliffe himself was wounded but managed to make his way back to safety within British trenches. This sketch serves as both a testament to his courage and an artistic documentation of one of history's most intense battles. This powerful image is part of an album containing various drawings associated with the Siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War. Preserved at London's National Army Museum, it stands as a reminder not only of past conflicts but also honors those who sacrificed so much for their countries' causes.
