EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Halt of London Imperial Volunteers, 1900 circa" takes us back to a significant moment in history during the Boer War. The image, captured by Underwood & Underwood around 1900, showcases the first glimpse of the Veldt - Orange River in South Africa. The City of London Imperial Volunteers were established in December 1899 under the guidance of the Lord Mayor of London. This volunteer force was generously equipped by the City Corporation and primarily recruited from existing volunteer units within London. Comprising two companies of mounted infantry, one battalion of infantry, and one battery of artillery, this regiment embarked on their journey to South Africa in January 1900. As we observe this scene frozen in time through a stereoscopic photograph from a collection entitled "South African War through the Stereoscope Pt 2 Vol 1" we are transported to an era filled with bravery and sacrifice. The soldiers stand tall amidst vast landscapes as they prepare for what lies ahead. This remarkable piece is now preserved at the National Army Museum in London. It serves as a poignant reminder not only of our shared history but also pays tribute to those who answered their nation's call during times of conflict.
