7341920 The Battle of the Nile, 1 August 1798. Chart of Aboukir Bay and of the action, late 18th to early 19th century (pen, black ink, watercolour) by Pocock, Nicholas (1741-1821); 37.5x47 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Nicholas Pocock
A detailed annotated scaled chart or plan of Aboukir Bay, with the main action of the Battle of the Nile shown on the left including the explosion of L'Orient and, on the right, the later disposition of the two fleets on the morning of 2 August. Other ship positions in the aftermath are shown round the bay, with a detailed key to ships, guns (and crew numbers for the British) at the bottom. Pocock presumably drew this up to help his own understanding of the battle, and it may relate to the plan included in Clarke and Macarthur's life of Nelson (1809) which includes such battle plans for all Nelson's main fleet actions.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the intensity and strategic complexity of The Battle of the Nile, which took place on 1 August 1798. Created by Nicholas Pocock, a renowned artist known for his maritime scenes, this detailed chart of Aboukir Bay showcases the main action of the battle on the left side, including the dramatic explosion of 'L'Orient'.
The meticulous annotations and key at the bottom provide insight into ship positions, guns, and crew numbers for the British fleet involved in this historic naval engagement. It is evident that Pocock put great effort into accurately depicting each aspect of this significant event.
As one examines this piece closely, they can almost feel themselves transported back to that fateful day in history when Admiral Nelson's forces achieved a decisive victory over Napoleon's French fleet. The chaos and drama of battle are palpable in every brushstroke and line drawn with pen and ink.
This print serves as both a work of art and a historical document, shedding light on one of the most important naval battles of its time. It is a testament to Pocock's skill as an artist and his dedication to capturing moments that would shape history forever.
