Oil on canvas by Charles Furse (1869-1904), 1894.
Roberts purchased his Arab charger Vonolel while he was still a major soon after the Lushai Expedition in India (1871-1872), during which he defeated the son of a locally renowned chief after whom the horse was named.
Although little bigger than a pony, Vonolel was his masters only reliable horse during the 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880) and carried Roberts on the celebrated march from Kabul to Kandahar. Thereafter he became a familiar sight at ceremonial parades and camps of exercise throughout India. He accompanied Roberts to Ireland where the latter served as Commander-in-Chief from 1895 to 1899.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

General Sir Frederick Sleigh Roberts, a legendary figure on his trusted steed Vonolel
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This oil painting by Charles Wellington Furse depicts the esteemed General Sir Frederick Sleigh Roberts astride his beloved horse Vonolel. Painted in 1894, this masterpiece showcases the bond between man and beast that played a pivotal role in military history. Roberts acquired Vonolel during the Lushai Expedition in India, where he emerged victorious against a local chief's son. Despite being smaller than most horses, Vonolel proved to be Roberts' steadfast companion during the treacherous 2nd Afghan War. As one of India's most respected commanders-in-chief, Roberts and Vonolel became synonymous with ceremonial parades and training camps throughout the country. Their partnership extended beyond Indian borders when they journeyed together to Ireland during Robert's tenure as Commander-in-Chief from 1895 to 1899. Furse's exquisite brushwork captures not only the physical likeness of these two remarkable figures but also their indomitable spirit and unwavering determination. The rich colors bring life to every stroke, highlighting both Roberts' resolute gaze and Vonolel's noble stance.
