EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored engraving of the geographical plan of the Island of Saint Helena, dedicated to Field Marshal His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent and Strathearn in 1817, provides a fascinating glimpse into history. Created by Lieutenant R.P. Read and J & M Rippin, this second edition map showcases the island where Napoleon was exiled after surrendering to the British in July 1815. The detailed chart, with a scale of 1:9,050 and north at 223 degrees, highlights key landmarks such as Napoleon's residences - from his first location in the center of the island to his final residence in Longwood. The ungraduated chart includes a scale in miles and features bird's-eye views of land topography along with names of estates and places of interest. Decorated with ships sailing through the sea and images of whales, this map also includes facsimiles of Napoleon's signatures at the bottom right corner. Published during a time when public curiosity about St Helena was high due to Napoleon's exile there, this print offers a unique historical perspective on one of Britain's most famous prisoners. Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this engraving serves as both an educational tool and a work of art that captures an important moment in history.
