EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pair of exquisite vases from around 1790, crafted by the Russian School in the 18th century. Made with jasper and ormolu, these vases stand at an impressive size of 85x56x56 cm each. The attention to detail is truly remarkable. The lids of these vases feature delicate grape bunches and vine leaf finials, adding a touch of elegance to their design. Bacchic mask handles adorn the tapering bodies, while a stylized scrolling border adorned with lotus and anthemion motifs further enhances their ornamental appeal. Resting on circular spreading molded feet and square plinths, these vases are inscribed with numbers indicating their uniqueness - No 00194 and No 00195. Although one vase has a missing section of its foliate border and one lid has two losses to the edge, it does not diminish their overall beauty. It is believed that this stunning pair may have once graced the Palace of Pavlovsk near St. Petersburg before finding its way into a private collection. There is speculation that they were presented as a gift to Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig of Oldenburg in 1801 by his sister-in-law Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia. This photograph captures every intricate detail of these ornate vases, showcasing them as true works of art that blend stone craftsmanship with decorative elements seamlessly.
