Royal William Victualling Yard, Plymouth, from Mount Edgecumbe, 1845 (calotype negative, paper)
7342529 Royal William Victualling Yard, Plymouth, from Mount Edgecumbe, 1845 (calotype negative, paper) by Talbot, William Henry Fox (1800-77); 16.6x20.1 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: William Henry Fox Talbot; Nicolaas Henneman
A paper calotype negative. A view across the water from the corner of the Garden Battery at Mount Edgecumbe towards the Clarence Building of the Royal William Victualling Yard, Plymouth dockyard. The photograph is framed by a tree in leaf on the left and two mounted cannon in the foreground. A similar composition was used by Talbot and Henneman before but placed people in the image (see P14CAL).
A letter from Talbot's half-sister Caroline Augusta Edgecumbe, married to the 3rd Earl Mount Edgecumbe, dated 7 September, expressed her delight at him visiting and confirmed that Calvert Jones and Nicolaas Henneman were welcome too. [BL, LA45-124 ]. However, a letter dated 23 September 1845 from Calvert Jones is addressed from Regent Street, London [BL, LA45-131, doc 5398] indicating that he was not there for the visit.
A letter from Constance Talbot, his wife, dated 12 October 1845 states I do long to see the Mount Edgecumbe views - particularly the battery scene, which may relate to this one as well as the image in P14CAL. [BL, LA45-136].); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the Royal William Victualling Yard in Plymouth, as seen from Mount Edgecumbe in 1845. The calotype negative on paper by William Henry Fox Talbot showcases a picturesque view across the water towards the Clarence Building of the dockyard. Framed by a lush tree and two mounted cannons in the foreground, this composition is both serene and historic.
The image not only highlights Talbot's skill as a photographer but also provides insight into the architectural beauty of the time. The presence of people in previous compositions adds a lively touch to an otherwise tranquil scene.
Letters from Talbot's family members reveal their excitement at his visit to Mount Edgecumbe, with his half-sister expressing delight and welcoming other collaborators like Nicolaas Henneman. However, it seems that Calvert Jones was unable to join them during this particular visit.
The longing expressed by Constance Talbot to see views of Mount Edgecumbe, particularly scenes like this one, speaks to the emotional connection that individuals had with these landscapes captured through photography. This print serves as a timeless reminder of both artistic talent and personal connections intertwined with historical significance.
