EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Solferino Tower, standing tall on the Butte Montmartre in Paris in 1859. Originally known as the Malakoff Tower, this architectural marvel soared approximately 25 meters high and boasted four levels of grandeur. However, during the tumultuous War of 1870, when Paris was besieged by the Prussians, a strategic decision was made to remove the two upper levels to prevent it from becoming a target for enemy artillery. The tower's fate took a tragic turn in 1874 when it was completely demolished, leaving behind only memories and engravings like this one by Meaulle. The image showcases the amputee tower on what is now an artillery park since its occupation during wartime. As you gaze upon this piece of history frozen in time through Meaulle's skilled engraving, you can't help but feel a sense of awe at the resilience and transformation that has taken place on this iconic site over the years. The Solferino Tower may no longer grace Montmartre's skyline, but its legacy lives on through art and storytelling - reminding us of both the fleeting nature of structures and their enduring impact on our collective memory.
