Alexanders Column near Cabul, c. 1842 (colour litho)

5929334 Alexanders Column near Cabul, c.1842 (colour litho) by Eyre, Vincent (fl.c.1841) (after); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Alexanders Column near Cabul, 1842 (c).
Coloured lithograph after Lieutenant Vincent Eyre, Bengal Artillery, 1842 (c).
As the British advanced into Afghanistan they came across many ancient ruins and monuments, evidence of the countrys rich and varied heritage. Individuals like Eyre painted, sketched, classified and recorded these sites, doing much to increase our understanding. Their work was part of the imperial scheme. The development of archaeology, linguistics, anthropology and the birth of the museum were all based on an impulse to collect, classify and control information about diverse cultures. It was no coincidence that many of the pioneers in the ancient history of the subcontinent, its religions and languages were often the very same soldiers and civil servants who conquered, surveyed and administered India and its associated regions.
From Portraits of the Kabul Prisoners, a set of pre-publication coloured lithographs later published by John Murray in 1843.
The artists original drawings were made during his captivity in Afghanistan after the Retreat from Kabul during the 1st Afghan War (1838-1842).); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Alexanders Column near Cabul, c. 1842" captures a moment in history during the British advance into Afghanistan. The image showcases an ancient column amidst the rugged landscape, serving as a testament to the country's rich heritage. Lieutenant Vincent Eyre, a member of the Bengal Artillery, created this colored lithograph based on his original drawings made while he was held captive in Afghanistan after the Retreat from Kabul during the 1st Afghan War. Eyre and other individuals like him played a crucial role in documenting and preserving these historical sites. Their work not only increased our understanding of diverse cultures but also contributed to the development of archaeology, linguistics, anthropology, and even museums. It is noteworthy that many pioneers in studying ancient history were soldiers and civil servants who had conquered and administered India and its associated regions. This particular artwork belongs to a set called "Portraits of the Kabul Prisoners" which was later published by John Murray in 1843. The vibrant colors bring life to Eyre's depiction of Alexander's Column near Cabul, providing viewers with a glimpse into both Afghanistan's past and its turbulent present during that time. This print is housed at London's National Army Museum, offering us an opportunity to appreciate Eyre's artistic talent while reflecting on the historical significance of this period in Afghan-British relations.
