EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite fresco painting titled "Portrait of the Baker, Terentius Neo and his wife" from a house in Pompeii. Created during the 1st century AD by an anonymous Roman artist, this artwork measures 58x52 cm and is currently housed at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples, Italy. Originally believed to depict Paquius Proculus and his spouse due to an electoral inscription on an external wall of the house, further investigation revealed that it actually portrays Terentius Neo, a baker, and his wife. The discovery was made through a graffito found inside their residence. In this portrait, Terentius Neo wears a toga which signifies his rank as a magistrate. He carries a rotulus or scroll while holding a pen, symbolizing his profession as well as sophistication. His wife stands beside him with her Neronian period hairstyle and dons an elegant pearl necklace. The composition beautifully captures the essence of middle-class life in ancient Pompeii. It provides us with insight into the daily lives of its inhabitants - their occupations, social status, and personal style. Through this remarkable image captured by A&Raffaello Bencini's lens, we are transported back in time to witness not only the artistic skill of Roman painters but also glimpse into the world of Terentius Neo and his beloved wife within their splendid home in Pompeii.
