Archimedean screw by Gaspard G. de Serviere, 1719
2603683 Archimedean screw by Gaspard G. de Serviere, 1719; (add.info.: Archimedean screw operated by reciprocating rope to give continuous circular motion. The screw is being used to raise water from A to B. The invention of this device for raising water by either a spiral tube wound round an axis, or by a broad screw fitted in a tube, is attributed to Archimedes (c187 - 212BC) but there is evidence that it was known and used for irrigation as early as 600 BC. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the ingenuity and innovation of the Archimedean screw, as depicted by Gaspard G. de Serviere in 1719. The intricate design of the screw is showcased in all its glory, with a single figure diligently operating it to raise water from point A to point B.
The Archimedean screw, attributed to the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes, has been a revolutionary invention that dates back centuries before this illustration was created. Its use for irrigation purposes can be traced as far back as 600 BC, highlighting its enduring impact on engineering and technology.
In this image, we see the reciprocating rope mechanism being used to give continuous circular motion to the screw. The attention to detail in Serviere's depiction truly brings out the complexity and functionality of this remarkable device.
As we marvel at this historical artwork, we are reminded of the timeless nature of human creativity and problem-solving skills. The Archimedean screw continues to inspire awe and admiration for its simple yet effective method of raising water—a testament to our ability to harness natural forces for practical purposes.
Let us reflect on the legacy of innovation embodied by this print and appreciate how it represents a pivotal moment in the history of engineering and technology.
