A Dutch ship in chase of an English ship, 1673 (graphite, grey wash)
7342102 A Dutch ship in chase of an English ship, 1673 (graphite, grey wash) by Velde, Willem van de, the Younger (1633-1707); 28.2x44.7 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Willem van de Velde, the Younger
On the right is an English ship in starboard-bow view, with a flag (possibly a Union) at the main, firing her stern chase. On her weather quarter, to the left, a Dutch ship with a striped flag at the main returns the fire. The smoke of a battle appears in the centre distance and the subject may be an incident in the duel between Cornelis Tromp and Sir Edward Spragge at the Battle of the Texel in 1673. In this case the ships would be the respective flagships Gouden Leeuw (left) and the Royal Prince'.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This graphite and grey wash print by Willem van de Velde, the Younger, depicts a dramatic scene of a Dutch ship in hot pursuit of an English vessel in 1673. The tension is palpable as the two ships exchange cannon fire amidst billowing smoke on the open sea.
The English ship, with a flag flying proudly at its main mast, fires stern chase at its pursuer. Meanwhile, the Dutch ship retaliates from its weather quarter with a striped flag fluttering in the wind. It is believed that this intense battle may be part of the historic duel between Cornelis Tromp and Sir Edward Spragge during the Battle of Texel.
Van de Velde's masterful use of free wash drawing over light pencil captures every detail of this high-stakes naval confrontation. The artist's signature and inscription in brown ink add to the authenticity and historical significance of this artwork.
As we gaze upon this piece housed at the National Maritime Museum in London, we are transported back to a time when naval warfare was fierce and unforgiving. The skillful rendering of these majestic ships evokes a sense of awe for their power and majesty on the open seas.
