7342101 Portrait of the George'? Fireship bought 1672, 6 guns, sunk for foundation 1674, c.1673 (offset, black chalk) by Velde, Willem van de, the Elder (1611-93); 47.5x50.3 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Willem van de Velde, the Elder
Portrait of the George from slightly abaft the port beam, under topsails, before the wind, with two other ships in the background. There are two broadside gun ports each on the forecastle and quarterdeck, and an escape port from the orlop aft. The figurehead is a lion and on the tafferel there appears to be a man on a rearing horse attacking a dragon with a lance (i.e. St. George), which suggests the vessel's likely identity. The George was bought in 1672 and sunk as a foundation in 1674.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait print captures the majestic 'George' fireship, purchased in 1672 with six guns and sunk for foundation in 1674. Painted by Willem van de Velde, the Elder, this piece showcases the ship slightly abaft the port beam under topsails, sailing before the wind with two other vessels in the background.
The intricate details of this artwork reveal two broadside gun ports on both the forecastle and quarterdeck, as well as an escape port from the orlop aft. The figurehead of a lion and a scene on the tafferel depicting St. George slaying a dragon with a lance hint at the vessel's likely identity.
This piece not only serves as a historical record of naval architecture but also highlights Van de Velde's skillful rendering of maritime scenes. The black chalk offset technique adds depth and dimension to this work of art, making it a captivating addition to any collection.
Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this portrait print is a testament to both British naval history and Flemish artistic talent. It stands as a reminder of an era when ships like 'George' ruled the seas with their power and grace.
