A portrait of the sixth-rate ship 'Saudadoes', also called 'Sodalis', viewed in broadside from before the starboard beam. She was built as a 6-gun yacht in 1670 and rebuilt as a 16-gun vessel in 1673, and was captured in 1696. The drawing shows nine wreathed ports with sweep-ports between the gunports, and a figurehead in the form of a man on horseback with a cherub behind. EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait of the 'Saudadoes' by Willem van de Velde, the Younger captures the essence of 17th-century naval power. The ship is depicted in all its glory, viewed from a unique angle that showcases its impressive size and strength. The intricate details of the ship, from the wreathed ports to the figurehead in the form of a man on horseback, are meticulously rendered with graphite and grey wash.
Originally built as a 6-gun yacht in 1670 before being rebuilt as a 16-gun vessel in 1673, the 'Saudadoes' was eventually captured in 1696. This drawing not only serves as a historical record of this formidable vessel but also highlights Van de Velde's skill as an artist.
The careful attention to detail and accuracy in this piece make it a true masterpiece of Flemish art. The use of wash adds depth and dimension to the image, bringing it to life for viewers centuries later.
Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this portrait is not just a representation of a ship but also a symbol of maritime history and naval prowess during this period. It stands as a testament to both artistic talent and nautical innovation, making it an invaluable addition to any collection.
