Thousands of pirates were active between 1650 and 1720, and these years are sometimes known as a Golden Age of piracy. Pirate ships usually carried far more crew than ordinary ships of a similar size - the extra men would take over any captured ships. Pirates also altered their ships so that they could carry far more cannon than merchant ships of the same size.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London
