7337960 Edward Fiennes de Clinton, 1st Earl of Lincoln (1512-1585), c.1575 (oil on panel) by British School, (16th century); 61x50.8 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: British School, probably after Cornelis Ketel
Clinton held high positions through four reigns. He was a royal ward and later courtier of Henry VIII and, after active service against the Scots and French from 1540, became Lord Admiral to Edward VI in 1550. Although Queen Mary deprived him office in 1553 for involvement in the attempt to put Lady Jane Grey on the throne, she reappointed him in 1558 after other services. He remained Lord Admiral under Elizabeth, actively into the 1560s and thereafter as a member of the Queen's council. He was also an investor in voyages of privateering and colonization. He had a stake in Drake's round-the-world voyage of 1577-1580 and probably in Humphrey Gilbert's expedition to America, 1578.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the essence of Edward Fiennes de Clinton, 1st Earl of Lincoln, a prominent figure in Tudor England. Painted around 1575 by the British School, possibly after Cornelis Ketel, this oil on panel artwork now resides in the National Maritime Museum in London.
Clinton's illustrious career spanned four reigns, beginning as a royal ward under Henry VIII and later serving as Lord Admiral to Edward VI. Despite facing setbacks such as being deprived of office by Queen Mary for his involvement in political intrigue, he was reinstated by Queen Elizabeth I due to his loyal service.
Beyond his political duties, Clinton was also an avid investor in maritime ventures. He supported expeditions led by famous explorers like Sir Francis Drake and Humphrey Gilbert, contributing to England's growing influence on the world stage.
In this portrait, Clinton exudes confidence and authority befitting his status as a powerful nobleman and statesman. His piercing gaze seems to hint at the complexities of politics and power struggles that defined his era.
As we admire this historical masterpiece, we are reminded of the enduring legacy of figures like Edward Fiennes de Clinton who shaped the course of English history during a time of great change and upheaval.
