Wallachian Hillmen founding a City, Ninth Century (litho)

8661423 Wallachian Hillmen founding a City, Ninth Century (litho) by Valda, John Harris (1874-1942); Private Collection; (add.info.: Wallachian Hillmen founding a City, Ninth Century. During the continuous barbarian invasions which started with that of the Goths in 270 AD the Daco-Roman inhabitants found safety in the recesses of the Carpathian Mountains, where they retained their language and nationality. At various periods afterwards they descended into the plains below and established fortified cities, which became the nucleus of petty principalities. During the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries these were consolidated into the two great principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia. EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the momentous occasion of Wallachian Hillmen founding a city in the ninth century. The scene depicts a group of brave settlers establishing their new home amidst the rugged terrain of the Carpathian Mountains, seeking refuge from barbarian invasions that plagued their land. As history tells us, these Daco-Roman inhabitants managed to preserve their language and nationality while sheltered in the mountain recesses. Eventually, they ventured down into the plains below, where they built fortified cities that would later evolve into powerful principalities. This pivotal period saw the consolidation of Wallachia and Moldavia as two prominent states in Eastern Europe during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The artist, John Harris Valda, skillfully brings this historical moment to life with intricate detail and dramatic flair. Through his work, we are transported back in time to witness the resilience and determination of these early settlers as they laid down the foundations for what would become thriving urban centers. This lithograph serves as a poignant reminder of our shared past and celebrates the enduring spirit of human civilization against all odds. It is a testament to our ability to overcome adversity and build communities that stand strong through generations.
